Air Ambulance Staff

Air Ambulance Victoria is staffed by ambulance paramedics employed by the Metropolitan Ambulance Service. The fixed wing airplanes are staffed by either a qualified ambulance paramedic or MICA paramedics, with the patients condition determining the level of care required.

All air ambulance helicopters are staffed by MICA flight paramedics as the helicopter workload revolves around critical emergency care.

Staff are selected from ambulance paramedics who have at least two years experience after qualification as a paramedic. Applicants must undergo a rigorous selection process of:

  • medical examination
  • pre-entry theoretical examination
  • psychological examination including acrophobia
  • familiarisation flights
  • physical fitness and swimming tests
  • practical scenario
  • interview panel

Once staff are selected they undertake extensive training.
